Welcome to the
Wilmington 1898 Museum
for Healing, Education & Democracy
Our History
A Painful Past
The museum tells the story of the Wilmington massacre and coup of 1898, the violent event where white supremacists overthrew Wilmington’s democratically elected government and destroyed its thriving Black community. The only successful coup d’etat in American history, this event reshaped not only our city but the very course of civil rights and democracy in North Carolina and beyond.
Our Hope
A Promising Future
The museum aims to be a place of education and reflection about this important piece of history and to invite a path toward healing.
